Goal Statement for my P.H.D
Many individuals have the wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity of a worthy purpose. My purpose for seeking a Doctorate Degree in Educational Policy Studies in Urban Education is to expand my knowledge of theory, organization and research methods as it pertains to education. I especially want to fine-tune my research skills as I feel that they are an essential part of becoming a lifelong learner both in and out of the classroom. In addition, gaining credibility amongst my future colleagues and people that I will be serving with in the field will be of utmost importance as I will ultimately leverage these relationships as I seek to pursue my goal of opening a private boarding school for youth who come from urban areas with limited financial resources. Dealing with the little boy that is inside of me
It has been two months since I asked the woman I love to marry me. While ecstatic for this new journey in my life, being engaged has brought a new level of accountability that I did not expect. I spent the first 30 years of my life thinking about me, myself, and I. This has been a tough learning curve psychologically for me to think as a unit as oppose to just thinking about myself. Through some long and uncomfortable conversations with my fiancé, I have realized that there is a stubborn little boy inside of me. (more…)

My Hard Journey to Marriage
Yesterday I asked a woman who I deeply love to marry me. If you would have told me three years ago that I would be engaged, and who the woman would be, I would have laughed and offered a friendly wager of everything I had that this would not happen. This journey has been one of self-assessment, reflection, humbleness, personal development, and prayer.

Assessing the Leadership of Cam Newton
There has been a lot of attention on the newly crowned 2016 NFL MVP Cam Newton. Some see Cam as a uniquely talented football player who is built like a tight end, runs the ball like a tailback, and throws the ball like a top notch quarterback. Cam plays the game with a childlike exuberance, and has created a cultural phenomenon with the “Dabbing” dance. (more…)

Don’t be the exception, CHANGE THE RULE
Like many of our young people today, I grew up with plenty of obstacles that I had to overcome:
- Father who spent time in prison
- Grew up in a single parent household
- Raised in a low income household
- Diagnosed with a learning disability at the age of five
- Being a black male in America
Growing up in this manner, the odds were not in my favor; despite these problems, I was able to graduate with a master’s degree, play in the NFL (more…)

Reflection on my Trip to “Holy Land” (A Call to Love)
Going to Israel and Palestine was very enlightening for me. It was great to tour old Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee. To walk the same path that Jesus once walked, is an honor and a privilege that most people who grew up like me will never get the opportunity to experience. While longing for a spiritual experience, what most impacted my time in Israel was the religious and ethnic strife that plagues this once Holy Land (there was a religious killing the day prior to my arrival in Jerusalem and a shooting in which ten were shot randomly not far from my hotel just after my departure back to the states) Even though a different conflict, I find it very similar to the problems plaguing the United States of America and more specifically my hometown Chicago, IL which some people refer to as Chiraq and deservingly so (lost a friend this year due to gun violence). From such great tension going on in both places, I realized that the problem is not money, land, resources, or a broken political system. The main culprit is the heart. Instead of promoting peace, love, and goodwill toward man, the people that are in leadership promote fear, anger, and isolation based on class, religion, and ethnicity. We are taught to hate our brother, and the elite use this manufactured hate to divide and conquer. (more…)
